As part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) provides leadership in transportation improvements and innovation through trusted, timely, impartial, and evidence-based information exchange, research, and advice regarding all modes of transportation. Cooperative Research Programs
The Cooperative Research Programs Division of the TRB, led by Director Christopher Hedges, administers a number of major research programs sponsored by other organizations, including the Airport Cooperative Research Program, Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program, National Highway Cooperative Research Program, Rail Safety Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Program, and Transit Cooperative Research Program. National Cooperative Research Program (NCHRP)
NCHRP is funded by the state departments of transportation (DOTs) and managed by the Transportation Research Board, part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. NCHRP conducts contract research on a broad array of topics of importance to state DOTs. This is accomplished through individual research projects and several ongoing subprograms that focus on a particular type of research.
NCHRP 20-44, Implementation Support Program
The Implementation Support Program provides funding to facilitate the use of NCHRP research by state DOTs and other transportation agencies.
The IDEA Program provides funding to demonstrate the feasibility of innovative concepts with the potential to significantly advance the state of the art and practice of the nation’s highway systems.
NCHRP 20-06, Legal Problems Arising out of Highway Programs
The Legal Studies Program conducts research for state DOTs specifically on legal issues associated with highway and transportation projects.
NCHRP 20-05, Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Projects
The Synthesis Program documents the current state of practice within state DOTs on specific topics.
NCHRP 20-68, U.S. Domestic Scan Program
The Domestic Scan Program provides funding for information sharing and technology exchanges among state DOTs and other transportation agencies.
